Victory Day is a national holiday in Bangladesh. Every year on 16 December, the day is celebrated in Bangladesh. The day was declared as the National Day of Bangladesh in a notification published on 22 January 1972. The day is considered a public holiday.[1] After nine months of the Liberation War, on 16 December 1971, about 91,634 members of the Pakistani army formally surrendered at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.[2] This resulted in the emergence of Bangladesh as an independent and sovereign state.
On this occasion, the day is celebrated every year in Bangladesh with due solemnity and great enthusiasm. The day begins with 31 gun salutes in the early morning of 16 December. Members of the army, navy and air force participate in a combined military parade held at the National Parade Square. The President or Prime Minister of the country takes the salute as part of the parade. A large number of people gather to watch the parade.
People from all walks of life, including the President, Prime Minister, opposition party leaders and activists, various social and cultural organizations, lay wreaths at the National Memorial in Savar, Dhaka, as part of their tribute to those who died in the Bangladesh Liberation War.
